As the sun begins to shine again, Georgia State University’s attendance rate falls as students crowd the campus greenspace. Rather than soaking up the Vitamin D, their goal is to soak up the flash of a prominent candid photographer.
The photographer has made a name through Instagram, where they share “candid” photos of GSU students as they walk through the greenspace and adjacent areas. At first, most students weren’t aware of the camera as it captured authentic strides, outfits, and moments between friends.
As the social media account gained traction, people began walking through the area with intention. Baggy pants, edgy sunglasses, and keychain tails multiplied. Fashion majors and art students with colorful hair dominate the scene, strutting down the makeshift runway.
Students gather on the grass, some holding up signs as they rate the looks on display. Cinefest, the campus movie theater, began offering discounted popcorn to those in the audience. For students who simply want to use the walkway as a path to class, good luck, as your sweatpants may be on display for all to see.
Last week, a few innovative students started pacing back and forth through the walkway in hopes of being captured in their most eccentric attire. Now, a “Conga line” of people parade down the walkway repeatedly, only ceasing when the sun goes down. The cement has worn down in certain areas under the pressure of their footsteps, and the uneven ground has caused multiple minor injuries.
Some argue that everyone’s quirks have become unoriginal. Will the candid photographer begin spotlighting the average student? Beware, those in neon fishnets, soon enough skinny jeans will reign at Georgia State University.
