Kennesaw, GA. – In the past month, the Young Republicans leaks have shown countless instances of racially charged and violent messages shared between potential leaders of the country. Severe use of slurs, threats, and other hateful comments flood the large group chats of the organization with them highlighting their damaging views. The worst of it, according to my friend, is the majority support for the character Jeremiah Fisher from the Prime series, The Summer I Turned Pretty.
The Summer I Turned Pretty is a romance drama about a teenage girl, Belly, caught between two brothers, Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher, during one fateful summer. It aired its final season over the summer, and the Young Republicans had very strong feelings towards it. Specifically towards the pairing of Belly and Jeremiah.
“Hey, I never actually watched the show, but Belly better stick with Jeremiah,” says Hunter McCoy from Virginia, personal assistant of a US representative, in a message. It received 32 thumbs up and 12 fire reactions.
Running for Kentucky’s House, Chuck White responded with, “I only seen like clips on TikTok, but those eyes bro. U right.” White quickly followed with, “No homo.”
Throughout the final season’s airing, we followed similar messages and general comments on the show’s plot between the call for genocide and the return to slavery. After Belly left to travel to France, one female member of the group chat said they preferred Conrad over Jeremiah. The following response from only the male members called her a flood of misogynistic terms and “blind,” and pleaded to her about “Jeremiah cut abs and built arms.”
We reached out to the Young Republicans for comment, “We do not accept the series outcome of Belly choosing Conrad, that we totally only heard from X and not on a group discord watch. We made a petition to send to Bezos directly that all of us signed.”
When asked about the other comments, such as praise for Hitler, they only sent The Nut an A.I image of Belly and Jeremiah expecting a child. The Summer I Turned Pretty is now streaming on Amazon.
