When the Athens campus re-opened their doors on January 29th, they did so without clearing the majority of the streets. This was certainly a problem for most students, and the poor groundskeepers were given most of flack for the unsafe environment. To that end, they decided to work extra fast over the weekend and clear out as many streets and sidewalks as they could.
Unfortunately, they made a grave error. In their haste to clear paths for the hardworking students, the groundskeepers spread a fine layer of ice on the ground, as opposed to a fine layer of salt. How this error was made is unknown, but the outrage from various students most certainly is.
One student slipped into the splits and hasn’t stopped cussing all week. Another was spotted scooching their way to class on an uphill slope. One senior student hurt their knee when they landed on it, stating afterward, “I wouldn’t be quite so salty about it if the thing I needed to feel better WASN’T ICE!”
The groundskeepers were quick to respond, and rock salt was properly placed by Tuesday afternoon. The fear that students feel when walking on pavement, however, may take longer to fade.
